GIFT
2009
Oil, gold leaf and graphite on canvas
24 x 18" on 2" gallery wrap
The layered images of "Gift," are drawn and painted. The images themselves are layered under organza fabric playing games with focus and detail. The ground for this painting is a piece of muslin which I burned to make the holes. I then applied it to the canvas with clear gesso, allowing marks from the burns to show through. The surface is not even, lending meaning to the "archaeological dig" of memories.
The Spainish doll is significant. My father gave me a doll like this when he flew Navy Reserves to Spain in the 1960's. My daughter, the model, received one from her father after one of his many trips abroad. Mine was a doll I could not touch, my daughter's is not.
