COMMISSIONING A PORTRAIT

My portraits are painted on Belgian Linen with the highest quality oil paint. I have spent a lifetime learning to catch a personality, not just photographic details. I look for the “Gestalt,” the way you hold your head, the way you gesture when you talk. My goal is to transcend the photo image and create your “visual biography.”

I love painting from life because I get to know the sitter. The communication between “me and you” produce more than a copy of your likeness. Life sessions take time and patience, two of our most cherished commodities. Therefore, photography is often necessary to finish a portrait.

THE PROCESS

Preliminary Discussion

We will first discuss your idea and your budget. This will include formal/informal settings, clothing, size, and number of people. Including hands or full body factor in the price.

Photo and Image Gathering

After a 25% deposit I will take numerous photographs. I will work with photographs that you provide if they give me the information I need to catch a likeness. I often request a video of the subject so I can see how they move, smile, gesture. I will present a sketch and a color study for your approval.

Painting the Portrait

I start the painting on oil primed linen. Completion time depends on the complexity of the portrait.  I will send you updates on the process as the work progresses. At the start of this process I request 50% deposit.

Completion and Delivery

Upon your approval of the completed portrait the remaining 25% of the balance is due. Your unframed portrait can be shipped, delivered of picked up at my studio. I have a list of fantastic framers for you to complement the portrait. Shipping and delivery costs are not included in the price.
